Shortwave Radiance to Irradiance Conversion for Earth Radiation Budget Satellite Observations: A Review

نویسندگان

چکیده

Observing the Earth radiation budget (ERB) from satellites is crucial for monitoring and understanding Earth’s climate. One of major challenges ERB observations, particularly reflected shortwave radiation, conversion measured radiance to more energetically relevant quantity radiative flux, or irradiance. This depends on solar-viewing geometry scene composition associated with each instantaneous observation. We first outline theoretical basis algorithms convert irradiance, most commonly known as empirical angular distribution models (ADMs). then review progression early satellite observations that applied relatively simple ADMs, current apply highly sophisticated ADMs. A notable development dramatic increase in number types, made possible by both extended observational record enhanced information now available collocated imager information. Compared their predecessors, ADMs result a consistent average albedo function viewing zenith angle lead accurate mean regional irradiance estimates. implication increased complexity may not be directly applicable insufficient accompanying information, existing new instruments where detailed available. Recent advances complement build base approaches, including machine learning applications semi-physical calculations, are highlighted.

Advances in Earth Radiation Budget Observations from Ceres Terra

The goal of the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) project is to provide a long-term record of radiation budget at the top-of-atmosphere (TOA), within the atmosphere, and at the surface with consistent cloud and aerosol properties at climate accuracy [1]. CERES consists of an integrated instrument-algorithm-validation science team that provides development of higher-level prod...

Global distribution of Earth’s surface shortwave radiation budget

The monthly mean shortwave (SW) radiation budget at the Earth’s surface (SRB) was computed on 2.5degree longitude-latitude resolution for the 17-year period from 1984 to 2000, using a radiative transfer model accounting for the key physical parameters that determine the surface SRB, and long-term climatological data from the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCPD2). The model...

The Effect of a Nonuniform Planetary Albedo on the Interpretation of Earth Radiation Budget Observations

The flux density measured at satellite altitude with a fixed field of view radiometer differs from the true flux density reflected by the earth-atmosphere system within the field of view of the radiometer. This difference is due to angular response characteristics ofthe radiometer, solid angle effects due to geometry, and angular reflectance effects of the earth-atmosphere system. All of these ...

Use of a GCM to explore sampling issues in connection with satellite remote sensing of the Earth radiation budget

Collocated in time and space, top-of-the-atmosphere measurements of the Earth radiation budget (ERB) and cloudiness from passive scanning radiometers, and lidarand radar-in-space measurements of multilayered cloud systems, are the required combination to improve our understanding of the role of clouds and radiation in climate. Experiments to fly multiple satellites "in formation" to measure sim...
